Self efficacy in relation to pain and injury is the ability to continue to live and function, even when faced with these challenges. It is linked with positive long term outcomes for people in pain.
Stopping everything because of pain or an injury and waiting for the pain to go before you can keep living is something that happens to many people and unfortunately can be encouraged by some health care professionals.
Most of the time, even when injuries are bad, there is a way to continue to stay engaged in some capacity.
Being injured sucks. How much it takes up space in your life, or how much it affects your identity can make it feel much worse.
The time I hurt my back 5 years ago vs again recently affected me very differently. Last time I took FOREVER To improve, kept trying to go back too early, felt distraught , etc. second time around... irritated but not really bothered. Happier to pull back. Identity intact.
Being able to keep training and working etc helped with this. Another reason why it’s so important not to just rest and wait.
I have the whole story recorded in these youtube videos, if you're interested. (there are 4 in total).
