who am i?
I am Frances K Brown and I’m originally from Brisbane, Australia. I am a physiotherapist and I graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2010. I am currently enrolled in a Post Graduate Sports Medicine course at the University of Melbourne, and I have personal training qualifications from the Clean Health and Fitness Institute. I also hold a Cert III in Fitness.
As a uni student, I became very interested in the gym, and started teaching Group Fitness classes (Les Mills) from second year uni onwards, which I continue to do today. I have been passionate about exercise ever since. I spent a few years doing long distance running, completing multiple half marathons and one full marathon, before switching more to to strength training in 2014 and have absolutely never looked back.
I began my career in private practice, working in Brisbane and Melbourne for 5 years before moving to the UK. In London, I worked for the NHS locuming for a year in a variety of musculoskeletal outpatient departments, before moving to The London Clinic for a one year contract covering inpatient and outpatient orthopaedics. I spent the next two years in Kuwait developing the physiotherapy department in the Elite Fitness gym, before moving back to Australia due to COVID. I was lucky enough to get work with Queensland Health working in a rehabilitation unit, dealing with mainly geriatric, neurological, and orthopaedic patients.
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to to work with a wide variety of patients. I was able to work at the Royal National Orthopaedic hospital in the UK, gaining experience working with specialist physiotherapy teams, managing shoulder instability as well as long standing chronic pain conditions. My recent experience with Queensland Health has given me some amazing experience working with those with acute, or long standing neurological conditions. The remainder of my private practice and gym experience has helped me to work with people in a predominantly exercise setting, including in a gym, allowing me to combine my passion (exercise and strength training) with my work.

What I aim to achieve with my patients
Pain can be more complicated than people give it credit for. There are ways to manage it, but reducing things down to a single biological or mechanical reason for a problem, and isolating that problem without looking at the body and person around it, often doesn't have a great success rate.
The process of rehab, to me, is one where patient and therapist work together to establish a clear plan of what needs to be done. They work together, often with a degree of trial and error, and refining of the plan, until things are under control. There are frequently ups and downs, but through clear communication, encouragement, and reassurance, the patient feels confident and supported enough to follow things through.
Ideally, throughout this process, the patient should be provided with the tools they need to be able to manage their situation, and be left with lifelong strategies to use in the face of pain and injury.
